The Hanover Book Festival was begun in 2006 by The Hanover Writers Club to help promote reading. While attempting to sell their books, too often authors would hear the discouraging words, "I don't read." In this age of television, movie and computer screens, the written page is becoming an anachronism in many people's lives. To encourage and promote reading as an enjoyable experience, the Hanover Book Festival was born.

Our Mission Statement: It is Our Mission to raise community awareness of reading, promote reading, and educate about the processes related to writing books, and to encourage and support Virginia's authors.

The Festival theme for 2006 was "Reading Rocks," and a Rock'n'Roll concert was among the highlights. Forty-five authors representing all genres displayed, signed and sold their books. Several author presentations and workshops were given throughout the day. A silent auction, face painting for the children, and door prize drawings completed the festivities. (More pictures here. The Second Annual Hanover Book Festival was a tremendous success, with over 70 Virginia authors and exhibitors in attendance. Featured speakers were Sharon Baldacci and Connie Lapallo, with several workshops given by Jean Keating and Puff, Becky Mushko, John Conlee, Karen Syed, and Barbara Shine. All of the authors enjoyed participating in the open mike sessions and competing to win the "Best Display" prize. Since this year's theme was "Open a Book - Take a Journey," several of the authors dressed in costume, adding to the festive atmosphere. There were also activities for the children. Outside, the "Hearts Afire" band took us back in time with classic oldies tunes while visitors strolled down memory lane viewing the anitque cars presented by several car clubs from the area.
